Q: In our workshop we use fully mechanized and automatic welding/machinery to complete our welds. I need to get my welders/ operators qualified, is the correct standard for this BS EN 287-1?
A: No. When qualifying welders, the emphasis is placed on the welders ability to manually manipulate the electrode/welding torch/welding blow pipe and thereby producing a weld of acceptable quality.
The welding process referred to in BS EN 287-1 includes those fusion processes which are designated as manual or partly mechanized welding. It does not cover fully mechanized and automated welding operator approvals.
The standard that you should be qualifying welding operators to is BS EN ISO 14732.
